College Goals: Freshman Year

College. No parents, few rules, and a huge responsibility. I’ve been waiting to go to college for years now, craving independence and freedom. I think with any new experience, I always have goals in mind. What am I looking to get out of this experience? Well, my friends, today I have my college goals for you! Some of these may be completely unreasonable, but sometimes you have to dream big, right?

Make new friends. I’ve had the same group of friends all through middle school and high school. Truth is, I’ve never actually had to make new friends in a long time. Usually it’s just quick acquaintances at camp or orientation, but these are possibly life-long friendships that I’m about to create.

Get involved! I really want to get the most out of my experience here. I didn’t join any clubs or organizations in high school. Nothing really floated my boat, and everything was super cliquey. Just being here for almost a week and a half, I’ve already found things I want to do! And, I’m going to be able to incorporate my passion for web and graphic design.

Breaking out of my comfort zone. Now, I’m not talking about partying and drinking, because quite frankly, that’s just not what I enjoy. I’m talking about meeting new people and putting myself out there trying not to care how people perceive me.

Be OK with living and doing things on my own. Going places alone terrifies me, even if it’s just to walk 10 minutes to go get the mail. Eating alone freaks me out as well.

Become more patient and not stress over little things. I’m notorious for stressing over tiny details. It can be helpful but also really damaging to relationships. I want to let go and have fun. I’ve already had a bit of stress this semester and my advisor gave me the best piece of advice. She said,”Abigail, there’s no need to have a breakdown over classes. The only time you should be that stressed out is when you are given two months to live or the IRS is after you.” Maybe that should be on a canvas or something, haha.

Those are the things that I hope to achieve in college. I didn’t add any academic goals because I feel like I need more work on the social aspect of my life. What are your college goals? Or even just goals in general? I love hearing from you!

  • Those are great goals! P.S. You should totally type up that piece of advice that your school counselor offered you and keep it close by to read anytime you feel overwhelmed. Best of luck-I’m confident you’ll conquer each one of these goals!

    • Thank you! That advice has stuck with me since she told me that. As long as I grow as a person, I feel like I’ll be happy with what I make out of my freshman year experience!

  • These are great goals! I never set goals like this for myself when I went to college, but I ended up doing almost all of the things on your list. The best decision I ever made was to join a sorority. I met my life-long best friends through the sorority and was able to get involved in campus life and volunteering in the community. I also joined other academic and extra-curricular activities. Getting involved in organizations that are interesting to you will introduce people in your life that are passionate about similar things. Good luck on your new adventure!! Can’t wait to read all about it! <3

    • Thank you! I can’t wait either. College is so much fun. Way more fun that I could have ever imagined!

  • Oh my goodness eating alone freaked me out, too, when I first moved out. Got over that really quickly. 😉 You’re going to have a wonderful year if those are your goals! 🙂 Best of luck!
