Current Read: Divergent
OK, so I’m very late on this whole Divergent trilogy thing, but you know, at least I got around to reading them at some point. I’ve heard a lot about these books over the years, but from the required readings in high school and the stress and busyness of college, I’ve never sat down to read them. Until now. I picked up these books back in January before I came back to school, and two months later, I finally read one of them.
When the Divergent series first came out, I thought it was going to be exactly like the Hunger Games. If you thought that, or even still think that, it’s actually not true at all. These books do have a similar element to the Hunger Games because they’re set in a post-rebellion time period.
In the Hunger Games, the United States is divided up into districts, each having their own central theme. For example, District 12 is focused on coal. In the Divergent series, the characters are a part of different factions based on their skill set.
I feel that there is constant suspense throughout the entire novel, and Roth always finds a way to surprise you, whether it be through budding romance, death, or people’s secret past. There was never truly a dull moment in this entire novel. I also think I kind of related to Tris in this novel more than I’d like to admit, haha. She has to decide her fate for the rest of her life and she decides to do something bold and exciting and scary. For me, I started college last fall and that was a huge move for me. New city, new state, no friends, and no family. My situation was kind of along the same lines as Tris’ which really allowed me to connect with her.
Since I am pretty late to the party on this one, a majority of you have probably read this. If you have, what did you think? (don’t spoil the ending of the trilogy for me. I’m in the middle of Insurgent right now) What books are you currently reading now? I’m always on the lookout for the next good book to read!
