5 Things to Consider when Registering for Classes
Class registration is here once again! This can either be really stressful because hello schedule conflicts! or… yeah, no it’s basically just a really stressful time. You’re basically scheduling how stressful your life is going to be for the next four months.
On top of just trying to get the classes you need and hoping there will be no schedule conflicts, there are so many other things you need to consider! Today I have five things that you may not have considered when it comes to scheduling classes.
eating
This is number one in my book. Never ever schedule your classes to go straight through lunch. Trust me, 12:30 will roll around, you’ll be starving, and you won’t be able to focus in class. I always try to make sure I have at least an hour free for lunch. Technically this hour isn’t even an hour. You have to take into consideration how far your class is away from the dining hall which will cut into your lunch time and all of the other stuff you need to get done on campus that you think you can squeeze into your lunch hour.
the gym
As most of us know, we should go to the gym. Being active is important for stress relief, mental clarity, and feeling good. I made the mistake this semester of not scheduling the gym into my day and let me tell you I regret it so much. I personally like to work out in the mornings, so I like to have my classes start at at least 9:40. This lets me go to the gym at 7am (I know that’s early for a lot of people, but A. I’m a morning person and B. at that time of day, you’re basically still asleep and the work out is a lot less painful) and be ready for class in time. Plus, by going to the gym that early, I’m able to get it over with.
labs
Most science classes have a separate lecture times and lab times. Especially for freshman, labs can take up a lot of your time and limit when you can schedule other classes. Also, never schedule your labs on the same day. I made this mistake, and my Wednesdays are so busy I barely have time to think.
club meetings
If you’re thinking about taking a night class, make sure it doesn’t conflict with a club that you want to be in! I know that I missed out on joining so many clubs the first semester of my freshman year because I had a night class on Tuesday. For some reason, all of the clubs at USC just love to meet on Tuesday nights.
going home
This is something I didn’t consider at all until I was in college. Having class on Friday afternoons might seem like a good idea, until you decide to go home one weekend and you either have to skip class or get home extremely late. I try to avoid afternoon classes all together just because I like to be done kind of early in the day, and I like to be home before 10 pm if I do decide to go home.
Have you registered for classes yet? Do you have any registration tips? Let me know if you do! Good luck for all of you who are registering for classes sometime in the near future!
