Healthy Spring Break Tips & Tricks

This post is sponsored by adidas. All opinions are my own. Thanks to you, I have the amazing opportunity to work with brands that I love, and in turn, collaborations like this make Living the Gray Life possible!

Adidas Spring Break Blog Cover

Ahh Spring Break. It’s a time where college students either take a trip they’ll remember forever or they’re sitting at home and working. There really is no in between.

Whether it’s at home or on a beach somewhere, it’s super easy to fall out of my daily routine of eating relatively healthy and hitting the gym. As a college senior, I feel that I have adequate experience doing the Spring Break thing to give some advice to not fall out of your routine for the week!

These tips & tricks can be used for any vacation you’re going on. Doesn’t just have to be for Spring Break!

Drink Plenty of H2O

day drinking + sitting on the beach all day = a recipe for dehydration

Always, always, always have more water than you think you need. When I was out on the beach all day (ugh plz take me back), I would have two 16 oz water bottles and a 32 oz water bottle.

Better safe than sorry when it comes to water. Plus, hydration will help you from being hungover, and everyone wants that, right?

Make Healthy Choices for Breakfast & Lunch

Starting out the day the right way in regards of nutrition will set you up for success for the rest of the day.

If I eat cinnamon rolls and sugar-filled cereals for breakfast, I’m much more likely to eat absolute garbage for the remainder of the day. I already blew my diet early in the day so what’s the point in eating better for the rest of the day?

Eating a balanced meal for breakfast and lunch will make you feel a little less guilty about drinking and night and/or consuming dessert. Although, you shouldn’t feel guilty at all because you’re on vacation and you earned it.

Do Something Active Every Day

Wether it’s walking to the beach, going for a walk on the beach, or taking a stroll after dinner, doing something active every single day will keep you from feeling like a total blob.

Like I’ve said before, a simple walk after dinner can really transform how you feel. Plus it gives you an activity to do that costs you zero dollars. Free is wonderful in my opinion!

Catch up on Sleep

Use your time off to catch up on sleep. Sleep is SUPER DUPER important for a healthy body and mind.

I usually feel guilty for sleeping in because I totally could’ve used that time to be a productive member of society. I could’ve written a blog post, gone to the gym, cleaned, log a few hours for my job, and really the activities I could’ve done are endless.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that sleep also makes me a productive member of society and I shouldn’t feel guilty for taking time for myself to sleep.

Enjoy Your Time Off

Set your out-of-office, turn off your email notifications, and just disconnect for the week. I cannot tell you how nice it was to not worry about work or school or the business side of the blog for an entire week.

I came back so refreshed at the end of Spring Break. I was ready to create content for the blog and dive head-first into my web development business. I wasn’t ready for school because #senioritis, haha.

I really think taking time off of everything and just focusing on yourself for however long your vacation is is a much-needed break in today’s culture. We are all so engulfed by this #NoDaysOff work culture. It’s not a great thing when it comes to mental health. So take that time off and don’t feel guilty!

How I Took Control of My Curly Hair

This post includes affiliate links. It doesn’t change the price of the product, but I receive just a little bit in return. Links like these are what help keep Living the Gray Life up and running! Thank you for your support 🙂

How I took control of my curly hair using the Curly Girl Method. Spoiler Alert: It works!!

Looking back at my curly hair routine from a few years ago makes me want to travel back in time and tell my past self to stop what I was doing and throw out every single one of those products.

Sound a bit harsh?

Well, it’s true… I always wondered why my hair would look perfectly okay and then by the end of the day it was a frizzy, puffy mess. #notcute

2018 was the year of self-discovery when it came to my health and beauty routines. I finally found a birth control method that works wonders and I took the time to research and learn about ingredients in my beauty products. Switching to natural deodorant, becoming more invested in skincare products, and finally researching products that are MADE for curly hair. I’ve stopped falling for these curly hair products made by brands who don’t know a single thing about curly hair and falling for all of their cool advertisements and marketing campaigns. Nope. No more.

Before (2015)

Before Curly Girl Method

After (2019)

After Curly Girl Method

The Curly Girl Method

Y’all I found my people when I discovered the Curly Girl Method. Turns out there’s an entire community of curly-haired girls out there that are sharing all the best products, what ingredients to stay away from, and how to tame your mane.

The essentials of the curly girl method are as follows: no sulphates, silicones, mineral oil, waxes, or drying alcohols.

The Curious Jalebi goes into wayyyyy more detail about why each of these ingredients is bad for your hair. Highly recommend giving that article a read (and honestly all of her articles) before you start on your own curly girl journey.

Curly Girl No List

If you’re ever unsure about whether or not a product is Curly Girl Approved, you can copy and paste the ingredients list into this website! It’s super helpful and I use it all the time.

My Haircare Routine

So the whole Curly Girl Method was a bit intense for my liking. Plus, those Deva Curl products are hella expensive. And I’m a broke college student living off at-most $500 a month. There’s not room in my budget for a $30+ haircare item.

Day 1: It’s Time for a Wash

The whole curly hair process starts with washing my hair. Sometimes I shower at night, and sometimes I shower in the morning. My routine differs slightly depending on when I’m washing.

The routine starts out the same – shampoo & condition. It’s important to stay away from all of the ingredients listed in that handy dandy infographic above. Those are known to dry out the hair and cause frizz. Frizz is the last thing I want.

Here are some of my faves:

  • Curly Girl Method Hair Care 4
Shea Moisture Curl & Shine Shampoo
  • Curly Girl Method Hair Care 2
    Cantu Hydrating Cream Conditioner

Washing @ Night

After rinsing my conditioner out and hopping out of the shower, I toss my hair up in a towel and let it dry for a few minutes. Apparently, terry cloth towels are the devil for curly hair so you’re supposed to use a microfiber towel to combat frizz…. I don’t do that because I’m #lazy.

Once my hair is no longer dripping wet, I add in a quarter-sized amount of leave-in conditioner. I run it through my hair and then throw it into a messy bun on top of my head.

I sleep with it wet and then do the whole styling process in the morning.

In the morning, I wet my hair until it’s in between the damp and soaking wet stage. I flip my head over, take a good amount of my hair scrunching gel, and get to scrunching. It’s essentially the same routine as washing my hair in the morning minus the whole shower part.

I scrunch until the curls are well-defined and then leave them to air dry.

Washing in the Morning

After rinsing out my conditioner, I grab my styling gel and get ready for some scrunching action. I turn away from the stream of water, flip my head over, and scrunch a good amount of my curl gel through my hair. Scrunching actions only.

Once I’m satisfied with the scrunching, I hop out of the shower and scrunch my hair with a towel until it’s no longer dripping wet. The less scrunching with a towel the better.

I let my hair air dry and it turns into these beautiful, well-formed curls that aren’t frizzy or puffy or undefined. It’s honestly amazing.

My Favorite Styling Products

  • Curly Girl Method Hair Care 1
Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk
  • Curly Girl Method Hair Care 3
    Mixed Chicks Curl Sculptor

Day 2 & 3: Style Me Please

I freshen up my curls with a mixture of water and my leave-in conditioner. It puts some moisture back into them and makes them almost just as bouncy as my day 1 curls.

If I feel like my water & leave-in conditioner mixture just isn’t doing it, I’ll re-wet my hair and add more curl gel. It takes a few tries to understand your hair and know just how much product it needs to be happy without feeling greasy or weighed down.

My day 2 and day 3 curls are still just as defined and beautiful as day 1!

Day 4 & 5: Messy Buns and Getting Stuff Done

After day 3, I’m not the biggest fan of styling my hair with curls. I find that my curls lose their oomph, and they get a tad frizzy. Plus, wearing my hair curly all the time is a lot to handle.

As you’ve probably seen in a lot of my Instagram posts or IG stories, I love a good messy bun, and that’s how I live the majority of my life.

I could easily wash my hair again on day 4 and start over with fresh hair, but the truth of the matter is is that I’m #lazy, and I find washing my hair to be an inconvenience LOL. Sometimes I look back at my middle school and high school self and wonder how on earth I managed to wash my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY. Was that just me? I definitely feel like it was a part of the times to just strip all oils from your hair on a daily basis.

Fun Curly Girl Videos

Keep in mind, I’m still only about 8 months into this whole curly hair journey. I’m sure I’ll find new products that I love and new methods that work even better for me! And of course I’ll share all of that with you 🙂 I introduced my mom to these products and she’s just as obsessed as I am. I guess that means it actually works!

House Plant Tour | Spring 2019

Plant Tour March 2019 Blog Cover

Hi. I’m Abigail and I have something I need to confess… I have an addiction to plants.

There’s honestly something so rewarding about keeping plants alive. They make any space more beautiful, and the fact that I’ve managed to keep something alive that solely relies on me for existence is an accomplishment.

I asked on Twitter if y’all wanted to see this post, and it was an overwhelming majority of “yes please I kill every plant I own and I need help.” Shameless plug right here, but if you want to be a part of my content creation process, go follow me on Twitter!

I have two types of plants in my house: cacti/succulents and regular house plants. Their needs are essentially the same, but the way I keep and care for them are vastly different.

March 2019 Plant Tour 1

House Plants

These are plants that require low to bright indirect light and need to be watered when their soil becomes dry. Essentially they’re everything I own that isn’t considered succulents or cacti.

The scary thing about all of these plants is that I have acquired all of them except 4 in the span of three months. I don’t want to think about how much $$$ I’ve spent on plants since the beginning of the year, but it’s okay. They’re purifying my air, right?

ZZ Plant & Snake Plant

Two of my absolute go-to’s for low-maintenance, low/medium light plants. Honestly, you just plant and forget with these. They don’t require a lot of water so they’re super beginner friendly!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 3

Rope Plant aka Hoya Carnosa Compacta

Ugh what a freaking beauty, am I right?? This is a newer addition to my collection, and I cannot believe I found him at Home Depot for only $15. I love the intricacies of the leaves, and they produce the most stunning flowers.

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 11
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 26

Pin Stripe Calathea

Another one of the plants whose leaves raise and lower during the day and night. This one has pink stripes which makes it even more beautiful! I was ecstatic when I found the perfect little pink pot at TJ Maxx.

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 12
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 28

Pilea

This plant is my #1 favorite. I searched high and low for this plant, and my #1 Trader Joe’s came through and had them for only $8. I love how it’s unlike anything else. The leaves and overall shape of the plant are so unique. Best of all, these plants love to sprout babies so you can grow your collection at no additional cost!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 13
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 31

Snake Plant

I mentioned a snake plant before, but here’s another! There are so many varieties of snake plants! This one is a smaller version that doesn’t get super tall. It’s perfect for small spaces like desks, bathrooms, and bedside tables.

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 14
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 29

Nerve Plant

Oh boy is this a drama queen. It wilts and looks completely dead when it’s parched. A good drink will make it full again!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 15
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 27

English Ivy

This is what started it all. I cut these from my backyard and they’re currently rooting in water. Some of the leaves look pretty bad because I gave them fertilizer and they burned… oops. You live and you learn!

March 2019 Plant Tour 16

Rainbow Moss / Rainbow Fern / Peacock Fern

I do not recommend for beginners. This guy is super finicky and requires so much humidity and moist soil. I keep it in a homemade self-watering pot and have it living next to a humidifier. SO MUCH WORK.

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 17
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 33

Dieffenbachia

RIP to this plant. I thought it was a gonner after Tom ripped its leaves to shreds, and I neglected it for months. It’s coming back to life thanks to a smaller pot and consistent watering. There are new leaves popping out so I’m hopeful. P.S. This plant is supposed to be so much more full. This photo does not do justice to how this plant is actually supposed to look.

March 2019 Plant Tour 18

Monstera Deliciosa

My pride and joy right here. This is the iconic plant with split leaves that you see EVERYWHERE. It’s super easy to grow, and it’s always a surprise when a new leaf uncurls!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 19
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 21

Norfolk Pine

Trader Joe’s had this for $18 in December. It’s so lush and beautiful and is actually a tropical plant and not a pine tree at all!

March 2019 Plant Tour 20

Calathea

Just like the maranta plant, this one raises and lowers its leaves throughout the day! Super beautiful. Found this beauty at Trader Joe’s for $8. Highly recommend their house plant section if you’re ever looking for a cool, not-so-typical house plant!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 4
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 25

Croton

Another one of my plants from before I knew what the heck I was doing. This one’s a drama queen and loves to lose its leaves if it’s the slightest bit unhappy. Do not recommend for beginners.

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 5
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 24

Dracena

This is one from the very beginning of my collection. Highly neglected & it’s in a state of recovery right now… oops. The tips got super duper crispy so I had to cut them off. There’s some happy and healthy new growth popping out of the top so that gives me hope that I didn’t 100% ruin this plant.

March 2019 Plant Tour 6

Maranta Plant aka the Prayer Plant

Can be a bit finicky… but even though she’s a drama queen, I still love her! Super cool plant because the leaves lower during the day and raise at night. They require a bit higher humidity or else the tips of their leaves will get crispy. It’s popping out new growth like crazy as well!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 7
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 30

Neon Pothos

Super beginner friendly! This one has grown like a beast since I first got it. Half the growth that you see is brand new which is ~amazing~. Also, how freaking stunning does it look in this matte black pot??

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 9
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 23

Golden Pothos

Super beginner friendly!

  • March 2019 Plant Tour 8
  • March 2019 Plant Tour 22

Pilea Glauca aka Red Stem Tears

One of my newer editions to my plant family! Found her in Miami, and I couldn’t leave the store without her. I’m obsessed with the silvery leaves and red stems. I can’t wait for her to grow and watch her fill out her pot!

Succulents & Cacti

I genuinely have wayyyy to many of these to break them up via types and varieties so you’re just going to get the breakdown of succulents and cacti.

During the spring, summer, and early fall, I keep my cacti outside on my front porch. This gives them as much sunlight as possible, and they grow like crazy. I keep my succulents out of the direct sunlight, but still move them outside. They’ll be closer to the side of my house so they’re not being blasted by the sun all day long and risk being sunburnt.

If the weather falls below 55-60 degrees outside, I move the plants inside and keep them under grow lights. This gives them the light they require because the inside of my house definitely does not produce the amount of light that they need. Plus, my one window that gets enough light during the day is definitely not big enough to have all of my plants huddled in front of it LOL.

If you have a question about what kind of cactus or succulent is in an image, leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you.

Cacti

A cactus is what started my entire plant addiction. It was purchased for me by my parents after my high school boyfriend broke up with me. I laugh whenever I think about that.

My most impressive cactus is the Snow Cactus aka a fuzzy prickly pear. It grows a ridiculous amount during the summer months and I love the uniqueness of it.

Succulents

A majority of these were gifted to me by Ashley of Magnolia Thyme. I work with her on photography, her website, and anything she really needs. Because she is a small business and was just getting started when I first began working with her, she would pay me in succulents, and I was 100% okay with that.

Did you know you can create new succulents by propagating the leaves of another succulent?? See that egg carton up there with tiny baby succulents in it? That’s my propagation station. If I find a leaf that’s fallen off and there’s a nice clean break, I’ll add it to my propagation tray. It’s so much fun seeing little baby plants grow from just a leaf!

Stay tuned for more plant related blog posts! Trust me, I have a ton of ideas… succulent and cacti care tips, regular house plant care tips, how to propagate succulents & cacti, how to propagate regular house plants, my house plant wish list, and the list goes on.

Would you consider yourself to have a green thumb, or are you someone who kills every plant they have??

IUD Experience Part 3: Three Months Later

** Please note that this post contains some descriptive detail of periods and the uterus and ovaries. **

Iud Experience Part 3 Blog Cover

This is the 3rd installment of my IUD Experience series. You can read Part 1 here and Part 2 here.

To be completely honest, I cannot believe I’ve had my IUD for three months. Three months exactly as of this week. Y’all. Where did the time go!?

I’ve talked about my background with PCOS and why I chose to go for the IUD. I’ve gone into detail about the insertion experience. Now I want to share exactly how I’m feeling and how my body has changed since I’ve had the IUD in for three months.

We left off in this IUD experience journey after the most painful experience of my life: the insertion. Would the cramping ever go away? Would I finally feel like myself again and not some raging hormonal crazy woman who couldn’t control her emotions? Would I actually not suffer from depression and migraines every time I got my period?

The First Month

The first month was definitely the most challenging. I never knew what my body was going to do that day or how I would feel.

Was I going to cramp all day? Would I be exhausted? Was I going to want to rip off everyone’s head?

Working Out with the IUD

This is where things got a bit weird for me.

I took about a week off of the gym after the insertion. My body needed time to rest, and I was not going to force it to try and heal my muscles while also trying to heal my uterus and cervix.

The first few sessions were solid. No issues, no pain, I was 100%. I was taking those workouts a bit easier than normal because my body was still healing.

About two weeks after the insertion, I was feeling practically back to normal. So, my workouts became intense again. I was pushing myself on leg days, my shoulders would feel like they were about to explode on my push days, and I was working hard on my deadlifts. But then, something changed.

Every single time I would workout, I would get horrific cramps. They were so bad where I was to the point of quitting my workouts and going home early. And then, when I would get home, they would continue to be bad for the remainder of the day. I was practically bedridden after going to the gym because my cramps were that bad.

I called the doctor about it and they got me in fairly quick to do an exam to see if anything was wrong. There was also a slight concern because you’re supposed to be able to feel the strings of your IUD right before you hit your cervix. I couldn’t feel mine. At that point, there was a scale of things that it could’ve been, and of course, my mind was dead set on the worst-case scenario: my body was rejecting the IUD and it would have to be removed OR the IUD had punctured the wall of my uterus and would have to be removed.

I went in, they felt around, and the doctor couldn’t find the strings either. So, off I was to do an ultrasound to see if the IUD was where it was supposed to be.

Everything checked out to be A-okay with the IUD. It was in the proper place, no issues were found, and the strings had gone back up through the cervix and into the uterus. No big deal.

What they did find was a 3cm cyst on my left ovary. I do have PCOS so I’m used to cysts and cysts popping on a regular basis, but when a cyst gets that big, it can be a bit painful. That was the cause of all of my pain. Thank god it was nothing serious, and it would go away after awhile.

I took about a week and a half off of the gym after the whole cyst ordeal because of traveling for the holidays. I can say that I haven’t had cramping during or after workouts since then. YAY!

My Life Now

How are my periods and do I even get my period anymore?

The short answer is no, I do not get my period anymore. That’s with the definition of active bleeding every month. So in that sense, no.

But here’s what I have experienced:

  • The first “period” was around Christmas. God awful cramping and exhaustion. I was on 1000mg of ibuprofen just to take away a bit of the pain. Not fun. But there was no active bleeding.
  • The second “period” was around the end of January. Cramps weren’t as bad but sometimes it would hit me out of nowhere and I’d have to legit stop what I was doing, sit down, and breathe through them. Took some Midol/Pamprin to deal with all of it. I did have that gross brown snot-like blood/discharge. So no active bleeding, but it wasn’t my normal.

I’ve only had this sucker in for 3 months so I’m still not 100% sure about how my body is when it’s on my “period”. So far I know I have cramping and maybe some slightly brown discharge, but other than that, it’s not bad.

I will say that it is a bit strange being iritable and cramping out of nowhere with no other signs of having your period… It’s kind of like “what the heck is going on with me” and then I realize, “oh, I guess it is that time again.”

Emotions, Anxiety, Depression, & Migraines

When it is around that time of my “period”, I get extremely irritable. Like, it’s bad. I am so sorry for the people in my life because it’s not great.

During my last two “periods”, I didn’t get my usual spells of depression. And, it was so freaking nice. I was actually able to function like a normal human while I was on my period. I wasn’t thinking about how awful my life was 24/7 or how I don’t think I’m good enough or how I didn’t even want to get out of bed because there was no point.

As far as anxiety goes, I haven’t noticed that much of a difference. I am on meds for my anxiety so that keeps me stable a good 90% of the time.

There was a point in time a few years ago where I was on a certain kind of pill and I would get migraines every time I went on the placebo pills so I could get my period. They came like clockwork. Over the past few years, we’ve changed up my pills so I didn’t have that issue anymore. When I switched to the IUD, migraines were a big worry for me.

Luckily I didn’t have one during my period in December. I did have one at the end of my period at the end of January, but I’m not sure if that was period related or if it was just the weather/something I ate. The next few months will definitely be a determining factor of whether or not my periods will trigger migraines.

Moving Forward

I’m genuinely so happy that I decided to take my reproductive health into my own hands.

I’ll be keeping tabs on my mental and emotional state as the months go by so I can get a better feel for what my body becomes when I’m on my period. Hopefully, as the months go by, things will start to level out even more and I’ll be even happier.

Part 4 is in the works and it’ll include any and all your questions about my IUD experience, PCOS, and all things related to the whole process. Thank you all so much for your support, and if you have any questions, please feel free to leave them below 🙂

Coffee & Chit Chat No. 11

JORD kindly sent over a watch for me to include in this post. All opinions are my own.

Coffee Chit Chat 11 Cover

Whooo first life update of 2019!!

2019 has already been filled with so many ups and downs. Like honestly, if the whole year is like this, I’m going to be an emotional wreck by the end of it.

Totally stealing my coffee & chit chat sections from Gabby because I live for her What’s the Roast updates.

Coffee & Chit Chat: Life

Denver Coffee

Work Trip to Denver, CO

At the beginning of January, I took a trip out to Denver, CO, for a work trip. My first ever work trip!

I do freelance web development as a #sidehustle, and I receive a lot of my work through my uncle’s design group. They’re based out of Denver, CO, so we decided to fly me out there, meet the team, and work for a week on some of their projects.

It was a week of work, but also a week of relaxing and trying so many different coffee shops. I LIVE for aesthetic coffee shops, and Denver definitely doesn’t have a shortage of those. My aunt and I went on a self-created coffee tour. We hit up Allegro Coffee Roasters and Huckleberry Coffee. Both were amazing!

I loved being able to get out of Columbia for a little bit and hang with my family that I don’t get to see that often.

Tom & Potato

If you follow me on Instagram, you probably know the sad news that I’m about to reveal. Tom is no longer with us. He has passed on into kitty heaven and is living a joyful existence full of wet cat food, catnip, and all the toys he could ever imagine. His 10 months on this earth were so full of life and love, and I know he is still with me in spirit.

While the whole situation is heartbreaking, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. The best case of a worst case scenario as I like to say.

About a week before Tom passed, this other cat showed up at our house and would play with Tom all day. He would stick around even at night, and eventually he straight up came in the house and started playing with Tom’s toys. We named him Potato.

Well, Potato never left. I took him to the vet, and he’s not chipped or fixed so he’s ours now. He’s loving his new life as my adopted child, and he’s super picky about only eating wet food (RIP my wallet). He sleeps next to me every night, he loves soft blankets, and he has the most pitiful meow you’ve ever heard. Potato has been a tremendous help for me as I process Tom’s passing. Potato will never be Tom, but I love Potato just the same.

I’m not a very spiritual or religious person, but Potato came into my life for a reason, and I am so thankful to whatever higher power is out there that placed him in my life.

JORD Watches

I am teaming up with JORD to bring you a cchance to win a $100 gift card to use towards your very own watch. Trust me, you’re not going to want to miss out on this.

The watches are a sophisticated mix of natural, and largely re-claimed materials, combined with quality movements and components.

– JORD

I’ve always been a watch person, but I’m very particular about my watches. Two years ago I invested in a Michael Kors watch. That same year I invested in an Apple Watch. But since then, I haven’t found a watch I truly loved until this watch from JORD.

Jord Watch 1
Jord Watch 2

I love that the watch is made of wood. Like how freaking cool is that!? It adds a whole different element to an outfit, and it seamlessly fits into my hipster-y aesthetic.

The craftsmanship on this watch is truly incredible. From the clasp to the face, it’s truly stunning 😍And you know what the best part is? They adjust the length of the band to your measurements which that frustration of getting a watch and then having to go through the trouble of adjusting it yourself is completely gone.

Skincare

2019 is the year of skincare. It’s one of my goals to understand my skin and curate a collection of skincare products that leave me with glistening, glowing, acne-free skin.

Although I haven’t quite nailed down the products, I’m proud of myself for applying my skincare almost every single night in the month of January. Go me.

Coffee & Chit Chat: Goals Update

Powersheets. Powersheets. Powersheets.

I’m really really really trying to get on top of my goals for 2019. I want 2019 to be the year where this blog turns into a profitable source of income, where I’m prioritizing my skin and health, and really nailing down what I want from my life.

Happy Planner Semester Review 7

Powersheets have truly changed the way I look at setting my goals. I was introduced to them by Slight Savvy, a publicist and influencer marketing strategist. She swears by Powersheets, so I invested a hefty $50 and bought a set for myself.

They take you through all aspects of your life to truly uncover what’s most important to you and what you want to focus on for the year. So far, I’m a month in and I love them. They keep me accountable for staying on track with my life. I’ll get into more specific goals next Coffee & Chit Chat, but for now, I’m headed in the right direction.

If you read this far, thanks for sticking with me through this super duper long Coffee & Chit Chat. I love your support, and don’t forget to enter the JORD giveaway! Let me know what you’ve been up to this year in the comments below 🙂

My Experience with The Happy Planner after 6 Months

This post includes affiliate links. It doesn’t change the price of the product, but I receive just a little bit in return. Links like these are what help keep Living the Gray Life up and running! Thank you for your support 🙂

Happy Planner Blog Cover

I distinctly remember the day over the summer where I posted on my InstaStory about debating which planner I should get and how I was tempted to get the Happy Planner. Seconds later, I received a text message from the one and only Kayla from Kayla Blogs with some exclusive info about her planner for the semester… She chose the Happy Planner.

If the planner queen herself raves about a planner and actually chooses to use it, I knew I had made the right choice.

I took a long lunch, hurried over to my local Michael’s and picked up my very own Happy Planner.

I published a planner reveal back in August, but I hadn’t really had the chance to fully experience how the Happy Planner functions for me.

Do I still love the Happy Planner as much as I did in August??? Keep reading to find out!

Happy Planner Semester Review 1

❤️ What I’m Loving

  • Ability to add and remove pages as needed
  • Expansion packs. I don’t own any, but for people who need accountability with finances, cleaning, fitness, etc., they seem to be great!
  • The Happy Planner Instagram. It’s beautiful and inspirational.
  • Sticker books 😍
  • Durability of the cover. It’s super sturdy & not likely to fall apart if you’re shoving it in and out of your bag all day every day
  • Customization on all levels. They make a hole punch so you can create and add your own pages, and they also make a box punch so you can create stuff that will fit perfectly inside one of the daily boxes.
Happy Planner Semester Review 2

👎🏼 What I Dislike

  • Feeling the need to own every sticker pack out there because they’re all so beautiful
  • Having to do some research to know what the colors/features are inside that you want. Each of the planners has a different layout and design. Make sure you flip through the planner before you buy to see if it has everything that you want. Some have a vertical layout, some have a horizontal layout. Pages before the start of the month vary between planners. Double check before you check out.
  • All of the planners aren’t available at every location. For example, JoAnns and Michael’s have different planner selections.

How I make the Layout work for me

The layout of the Happy Planner is so versatile, but can be super overwhelming. I dove head-first into Happy Planner videos on YouTube to see how other people were making their planner work for them.

Turns out, most of the people on YouTube are making their planners look like a perfectly put together scrapbook instead of a daily planner…

The Monthly Spread

I use this as my “editorial calendar”.

I put that in quotes because I don’t 100% stick to my editorial calendar, but it gives me a place to jot down blog post ideas and a rough idea of when I want to publish them. This is the only page I use pencil on, and it’s for a good reason. Things are always changing with the calendar, so I don’t want it to be filled with crossed out pen. That’s annoying.

Happy Planner Semester Review 1 2

I absolutely LOVE having my editorial calendar with me at all times in paper form. I used to have one pinned to the wall in my office, but I would never stick to it… Now I can work on things when I’m not home and still see exactly when I want content published.

The Weekly Spread

This is where things get exciting because there are so many different ways you can use the three vertical boxes.

I started out doing: Morning, Afternoon, Evening

Happy Planner Semester Review 4

It made the most logical sense to me, but after a while, things got a bit jumbled and it made me realize I needed to try something different. I am not only using the planner for my school and personal life, but it also has blogging/business stuff in it as well.

Happy Planner Semester Review 5

Top & Middle Boxes: Daily to-do lists and appointments/reminders/activities

Bottom Box: Blogging & Podcast stuff

Other Fun Stuff

To keep things super organized, I color code everything… well, almost everything… using my Zebra Midliner highlighter/marker/pens. I love the look of black ink with muted highlight tones. It makes me so much more likely to actually get stuff done!

Happy Planner Semester Review 6

Stickers and washi tape are a super duper fun way to spice up your weekly spreads if you have the time. I notice that I used to do the whole weekly spread thing more in the fall than I have now. It’s a lot of work, and it’s super easy to start comparing my spreads to other people’s spreads on Instagram.

And in regards to being able to add your own custom pages, I’m still waiting to get that Happy Planner hole punch…

Overall, I truly love my Happy Planner. It fits my needs perfectly, and it’s the best $$$ I’ve spent on a planner in a long time.

If you’re someone who wants a cut and dry planner where you don’t have to do anything to make it function the way you want, I wouldn’t recommend this to you. It takes a little bit of effort to figure out how to use the Happy Planner to best fit your needs.

Taking some time outside of CrossFit to drill down and focus on my weightlifting technique. Snatches and cleans have always been a little intimidating and I’ve been scared to push myself on them for fear of injury. Looking forward to seeing how my lifts progress over the next few months!

Oh, and mental health is doing fantastically, too!

@cattyelizabeth5 and I are back after 3 long months, and we’re so excited to share the first episode of season 5 of Girls Talk! It’s a good one and a pretty great way to spend an hour of your quarantine 💁‍♀️
These photos were taken THREE YEARS AGO... honestl These photos were taken THREE YEARS AGO... honestly it feels like yesterday. I was 9 months in to my fitness journey, tracked macros like it was my job, and religiously went to the gym 5-6 days a week. Seeing this pop up in my “Memories” was just what I needed today because being stuck at home because of my susceptibility to lung problems and #covid_19 has left me highly unmotivated to workout...
